Olowalu Plantation House is one of my favorite wedding venues on Maui. It has a historic home, big trees, and an oceanfront lawn all in one place, with a view that feels distinctly Olowalu. There is room to bring everyone together, plus quieter spots where you can take a breath.
I photographed this Olowalu Plantation House wedding from getting ready at the house to sunset portraits along the shoreline. Deep berry flowers, tropical greenery, and an outdoor reception brought color and texture to the day. What I keep coming back to, though, are the people in these photographs: helping the bride dress, celebrating along the aisle, and gathering around the tables.
If you are planning a Maui wedding and want a place to settle in with your guests, this celebration offers a lovely look at what a day at Olowalu can feel like.

Why Olowalu Is One of My Favorite Maui Wedding Venues
Olowalu Plantation House was built in 1922. The property includes the historic home, furnished dressing rooms, a spacious lanai, and an oceanfront lawn for ceremonies and receptions.
For couples, one of the nicest things about Olowalu is being able to stay in one place. You can get ready at the house, exchange vows on the lawn, and gather for dinner near the water. When we step away for portraits, your celebration is still close by.
I appreciate having that flexibility behind the camera, too. We can find greenery beside the house, shade beneath the trees, and open views along the shoreline without spending your wedding day driving between locations.
The property also gives you room to make it your own. A larger celebration can include lounge furniture and a full outdoor dinner setup. With a smaller guest list, you can bring everyone closer together around the house and trees. Your planner can help you arrange the rentals and services that suit your plans, since those are separate from the property hire.
The setting is beautiful on its own, but it leaves room for your people and your choices to make the day feel personal.
Getting Ready at the Plantation House
The groom wore a navy suit with a floral boutonniere. We photographed his portrait beside the house, where tropical leaves and red ginger flowers framed him.
Inside, the bride put on her earrings near the window. Her bridal look included delicate beaded details and softly draped white fabric.
A black-and-white photograph shows loved ones helping arrange that fabric around her. I loved seeing their hands reach in and make small adjustments before she was ready to leave.
Those are the getting-ready moments I want you to have alongside your portraits. The finished look matters, and so does remembering who helped you with the last few details.
Packets marked “For Your Happy Tears” were another sweet part of the day. Small things like these are worth photographing because they are part of what you chose to share with your guests.
An Oceanfront Ceremony Beneath the Trees
The ceremony took place on Olowalu’s lawn, with wooden chairs beneath the trees and the ocean beyond. Low floral arrangements kept the space open, letting the grounds remain part of the setting.
The bride wore a veil and white floral lei. The groom wore a greenery lei over his navy suit. During the ceremony, water was poured over their joined hands into a bowl, a detail preserved in a close photograph.
During your vows, I want you to stay with each other. You do not need to look toward me or think about what the photographs will look like. I will stay attentive to what is happening, including the people watching from their seats.
After the ceremony, the couple walked back down the aisle hand in hand as guests stood and applauded. There is so much to return to in that photograph: their smiles, the faces beside them, and everyone celebrating at once.
A Love Note to the Couple
Umesha and Chris - What a gorgeous wedding the two of you had. Every detail was so well thought out, and I loved how you incorporated so much of your culture into your day. I loved your guests' fashion, their energy, and how they surrounded you both with love and celebration. I especially loved your wedding dress! You and Chris were absolutely glowing that day… Not to mention some of the sweetest people I have ever met. I’m so grateful to have been there to capture your big day. Thank you so very much for having me!
An Outdoor Reception With Berry Flowers and Tropical Fruit
The reception brought everyone together near the house, with wooden tables, white linens, light wood chairs, and woven pendant lights overhead.
Burgundy and red flowers carried the color palette into dinner. Green blooms, sculptural stems, bananas, pears, and small orange accents added texture to the tables.
I like making time to photograph these details before everyone settles in. You have put thought into the flowers, place settings, and little touches, and you may not see every table before the celebration begins.
There were colorful drinks to remember, too: one coral-orange and one pale yellow, finished with citrus and an orchid bloom.
Together, the details gave the reception a warm, tropical feeling without taking attention away from the setting or the people gathered there.
Sunset Wedding Portraits Along the Olowalu Shoreline
Later, we photographed the couple beside the water, with the mountains behind them. We made a few portraits facing the camera, then stayed for the softer light as the sun lowered over the ocean.
One photograph shows the groom kissing the bride’s forehead, with warm light catching her veil. Another brings the attention to their hands and rings.
This is where a little guidance can help you relax.
You do not need to know where to stand, what to do with your hands, or how to look natural. I will help you find the light and give you simple direction. Then you can settle in together instead of trying to remember a pose.
The editorial side of my work comes through in that care: the light, framing, and small adjustments that help a portrait come together. There is still room for movement, conversation, and the moments between.
I want you to feel supported during portraits and have time to return to the people waiting to celebrate with you.
Planning Photography for Your Olowalu Plantation House Wedding
When we plan your photographs, we will start with what matters to you. That might be having everyone together for family portraits, spending most of cocktail hour with your guests, or stepping away for a few minutes near sunset.
A few things are helpful to think through with your planner:
Getting ready at the house: Confirm when you will have access so there is enough time to dress without feeling rushed.
Your ceremony location and time: Consider the view, shade, and light together rather than choosing each separately.
Family photographs: Share the combinations you would like ahead of time so we can gather people thoughtfully.
Couple portraits: Leave a little space to use the grounds and shoreline without making portraits the focus of the whole afternoon.
Time with your guests: Protect the parts of the celebration you are most looking forward to.
We do not need to photograph you in every corner of the property. We can choose the places that suit your day and make room for the photographs you will care about.
